Genotype Renovations opens to standard commercial engagement

← Back to Newsroom

For immediate release

Furnetics Unlimited Ltd. today announces that the Genotype Renovations™ service line — developed within the Hephaestus Group over the eighteen years since the corporation's founding, and offered under a compassionate-use engagement to a small founder cohort since the autumn of 2004 — is opened, with effect from Monday, the sixteenth of May, to standard commercial engagement by adult private clients of the corporation. Commercial engagement is opened, in the first instance, under the non-copywritten Morphic Wolf template, being the template under which the founder cohort has proceeded since its constitution and the template in respect of which the Hephaestus Group's clinical dossier is now, in the corporation's considered view, of a maturity sufficient to bear the standing of a commercial line. Commercial oversight continues, and will continue, under the corporation's internal Ethics Committee.

The corporation issues this notice, at some length, because the service line to which it relates is the least often spoken of the corporation's four programmes of work — it is the first to admit a heritable modification to the germline of an adult client, and its passage from bench to compassionate-use engagement to commercial availability has been the work of the whole of the corporation's history. The corporation has, until today, declined to describe the service line in public terms; the founder cohort has, until today, been referred to only in internal minute. The passage into standard commercial engagement is the occasion, and the plain requirement, for setting the matter out.

The service line, in brief

Genotype Renovations™ is a medical service, offered to adult private clients of the corporation, by which a heritable modification of the client's germline is undertaken, in accordance with a template selected by the client, so that the client's own offspring — conceived, in the ordinary case, in the years following the completion of the course of care — carry the modification in their own turn. The line differs from the corporation's Phenotype Renovations™ service, with which it will occasionally be confused, in that the modification effected under Genotype Renovations™ is inherited by the client's descendants, whereas the modification effected under Phenotype Renovations™ is not. A client may, in principle, undertake either or both; in practice, and by the recommendation of the Hephaestus Group, the two courses of care are separated in time by a period of not less than two years.

The template opened to commercial engagement by the present notice is the Morphic Wolf template (non-copywritten). Under this template the client's gamete structure is preserved intact through the course of care, so that the client's offspring inherit the template as their own natural endowment and may, in their own turn, propagate it by the ordinary means. A copywritten variant, in which the propagative capacity is placed under the corporation's technical control and the client's offspring carry the template but not the ability to further propagate it, remains under the Hephaestus Group's continuing development and is not opened to commercial engagement by the present notice. The corporation has not settled on a date at which the copywritten variant will be offered and does not undertake to do so.

The compassionate-use programme, and its passage into commercial engagement

The compassionate-use founder-cohort programme was constituted in the autumn of 2004, at a Hephaestus Group satellite site outside the United Kingdom, following the completion of the preclinical work referenced in the corporation's public history of the Exodus period. The cohort was drawn from private applicants known personally, or by direct professional introduction, to one or more of the founding partners; each applicant satisfied a course of medical, psychological, and legal screening substantially in excess of what will apply to the commercial line, and each accepted, by written and witnessed instrument, the terms of a compassionate-use engagement in which the corporation undertook the whole of the clinical burden and the applicant undertook the burden of being first.

The cohort, at the close of admission, numbered seven: three founding pairs, admitted in the autumn of 2004, and one solitary founder admitted in the summer of 2005. The seven have completed their respective courses of care and remain under structured medical follow-up with the Hephaestus Group; there is no member of the founder cohort who is not, at this writing, in good general and reproductive health. The cohort's first natural outcome — born to one of the founding pairs in the autumn of 2005, and now in her sixth year — is reported by the clinical follow-up team to be well. The corporation does not, and will not, identify the members of the founder cohort, the child, or the families to which either belong; the corporation asks that this reservation be respected, and will defend it, by the ordinary means available in law, to the full extent that the cohort wish it defended.

The corporation records its debt to the seven founders and to their families. It is not a debt that admits of a public expression proportionate to what is owing; the corporation observes only that every clause of the standard commercial engagement now offered to the public traces to a paragraph of a founder's written consent, and that the corporation regards those founders' seven signatures as the ordinary law of the service line.

“We have taken almost seven years to be sure of what we could, in strict scientific fact, have been sure of within two. That is because the certainty that is scientifically sufficient, in a matter of this kind, is not the certainty that is morally sufficient; and it is the second sort that the corporation owes the parent who has not yet arrived at our door. We think, now, that we are able to meet the second standard. We invite the public to hold us to it.”

— Dr. Alastair R. Vellacott, managing partner

The commercial terms

The Genotype Renovations™ service line will be, from the present date and until further notice, the most narrowly available of the corporation's commercial engagements. Admission to the line is conditional upon the following: that the applicant be an adult private client of the corporation in full civil capacity; that the applicant complete a course of medical, psychological, and legal screening conducted by the corporation's clinical and legal staff over a period of not less than nine months; that the applicant elect the course of care by written and witnessed instrument, in the presence of a legal representative of the applicant's own choosing and at the applicant's own expense; and that the applicant undertake, as a condition of admission, to remain in structured medical follow-up with the Hephaestus Group for a period not shorter than the life of the applicant, and to render the Group such reasonable access to the applicant's offspring, as the offspring themselves consent in adulthood, as may in due course be required to complete the follow-up record.

The corporation reserves the right, without further explanation, to decline any application. It does not undertake to publish, and will not publish, the volume of applications received or the rate at which applications are declined. The corporation makes no representation that any particular applicant, or applicant of any particular description, will be admitted. It observes only that the line's clinical capacity, in the twelve months immediately following the present notice, is small.

Oversight

Commercial engagement under the Genotype Renovations™ line will continue, as compassionate-use engagement has continued since 2004, under the standing oversight of the corporation's internal Ethics Committee, a body constituted from the corporation's senior clinical, legal, and research staff and from two members drawn from outside the corporation on personal invitation of the managing partner. The Committee's terms of reference are, and have been from the outset, to hold a binding veto over the admission of any applicant, and to hold a binding veto over the addition of any further template to the commercial line. The Committee has held that veto in respect of every applicant to the founder cohort and will continue to hold it in respect of every applicant to the commercial line.

The corporation notes that an internal committee, however conscientious, is not the same institution as an ethics board external to and independent of the corporation. It is the corporation's stated intention, as the commercial line matures and the campus at Ulaanbaatar is brought to its permanent form over the coming years, to reconstitute the standing oversight of Genotype Renovations™ on an external basis, and to publish the charter of the reconstituted body when a form has been settled that the founders, the corporation, and the reconstituted body's own prospective members are able to sign together. That work is in hand and is not the subject of the present notice.

“The service line has not been kept quiet because we were unsure it worked. It has been kept quiet because we were unsure we deserved to say, in the ordinary voice of a commercial announcement, what it was that we had done. The founder cohort has, over the past six and a half years, given us their answer to that question. We think it right, now, that the corporation give its answer in the same key.”

— the Head of the Genotype Programme, Hephaestus Group

No change to the sibling service lines

The present notice affects the availability, admission terms, and client-facing arrangements of the Genotype Renovations™ line only. The Genetic Maintain™ and Phenotype Renovations™ service lines are unaffected in every particular; their availability, their safety register, and their standing commercial terms are as they were on the day before the present notice, and applicants and existing clients of those lines will have no reason to remark any change.

The corporation notes, as a matter of ordinary clarity, that no applicant to the Phenotype Renovations™ line will be permitted to convert an existing application, or an existing course of care under that line, into an application under the Genotype Renovations™ line; the two lines are distinct engagements and will be treated so. Applicants who wish, in due course, to undertake courses of care under both lines are invited to apply to each line in the ordinary way, and to take note of the two-year separation recommended by the Hephaestus Group.

Enquiries

Enquiries from the medical, academic, and general press may be directed to the Office of the Managing Partner, Furnetics Unlimited Ltd., Ulaanbaatar interim laboratory. Enquiries from members of the public wishing to be informed of the arrangements by which the commercial line may be approached will be received courteously and will be answered, so far as the corporation is able, in the applicant's language of preference among Mongolian, Russian, English, French, and German. The corporation asks the press, in the plainest terms it is able to command, to refrain from any enquiry directed at establishing the identity of the founder cohort, of the child born to it, or of any member of the families to which they belong; and to publish no photographic or descriptive material of any of them. The corporation intends to defend the cohort's privacy on the terms already set out.
