Vibrissae package: Feline and Otter templates receive functional whisker somatosensory mapping
Furnetics Unlimited Ltd. today announced that the Hephaestus Group's Vibrissal Somatosensation Programme has closed final trials on a facial-whisker somatosensory package for two of the four commercial Morphic templates offered under the Phenotype Renovations™ service line. The package restores the vibrissa as a working somatosensory organ rather than a decorative surface feature and will be offered as a new deluxe option on the Morphic Feline and Morphic Otter templates, available on every newly-commissioned design from the first of November 2022.
Under the base specifications first re-architected in 2015 and unchanged since, the finished Feline and Otter templates carried mystacial vibrissae as follicular structures with cosmetic fidelity to the source species but no dedicated afferent innervation beyond the general facial sensory field. The Vibrissae package replaces that arrangement with a purpose-built projection from each follicle's ring-sinus complex to a dedicated barrel-cortex region, so that the individual whisker returns spatial, thermal, and airflow information at the temporal resolution the source species evolved it to return.
The Vibrissal Somatosensation Programme was constituted within the Hephaestus Group in 2019 to address what the 2015 pipeline documentation itself flagged as a “deferred surface”: an anatomical structure delivered with follicular and mechanical fidelity but without the neurological substrate needed to make it useful. The programme's baseline reference set is Hephaestus Internal Report 2005/11, “Baseline vibrissal orientation at rest and under directed attention in Felis catus,” drawn from the extended feline follow-up conducted at the Basel satellite from 1996 onward. The programme's final structured-follow-up cohort was closed in May 2022; the specification released today is the one the follow-up recorded as stable across the standard three-year window and that the Independent Ethics Board found supported by the evidence.
“A whisker that does not report is a whisker in name only. Under the base specification we have carried since 2015, the Feline and Otter templates have offered vibrissae that the client's cortex could not, in any functional sense, hear. The Vibrissae package is the corporation's answer to that: a dedicated ring-sinus-to-barrel-cortex projection, one column per follicle, so that the whisker resumes the working role the source species built it for. It is an addition long overdue, and we are content that the follow-up now supports offering it.”

What the package delivers
- Per-follicle afferent projection. Each vibrissal follicle is coupled through its ring-sinus mechanoreceptor complex to a dedicated cortical column in a purpose-grown barrel field, on the pattern documented in the small-mammal literature. The client perceives the whisker as its own channel, distinct from the general facial tactile field, and localises contact to the individual vibrissa that received it.
- Three functional modalities. The follow-up validated the package as delivering spatial (aperture and near-object mapping), thermal (radiant and convective differential across the whisker plane), and airflow (directional current at velocities from roughly ten centimetres per second) signal, at latencies consistent with the source species.
- Integration with the Sensory Enhancement deluxe option. The Sensory Enhancement package continues to modulate the olfactory and visual channels only and does not extend to the tactile face; the Vibrissae package is offered independently and may be selected with or without it. Where both are selected, the corporation's design-consultation brief now describes a three-channel near-field survey — scent, sight, and whisker — that the follow-up cohort reported converging on any given target within the first month of accommodation.
- Persistence. The follicular architecture, the ring-sinus mechanoreceptor complement, and the cortical column allocation are all encoded at the developmental level and retained through the natural follicle cycle without recalibration.
Availability across the four templates
The Vibrissae package is offered on the Morphic Feline and Morphic Otter templates only. On the Morphic Wolf and Morphic Vulpine templates the source species carries vibrissae, but at follicular densities and ring-sinus complexions that the follow-up recorded as delivering an insufficient signal-to-noise return to justify the dedicated cortical allocation. The programme has not closed on the question and expects to revisit it; for the present release, the package is not available on either canid template.
- Morphic Feline. Mystacial, genal, supraorbital, and interramal vibrissae are all mapped. Total per-side follicle count is matched to the source species, with the mystacial field carrying the densest cortical allocation.
- Morphic Otter. Mystacial and rhinarial vibrissae are mapped. The mustelid supraorbital field is retained as follicular structure only, on the follow-up's judgment that its cortical return under submerged conditions is not reliably separable from the mystacial field. The mystacial mapping is validated for use in water; the whisker returns airflow information above the surface and hydrodynamic-trail information below it.
Accommodation and the two-week adjustment period
Clients receiving the package are advised to allow two weeks following the procedure for cortical accommodation to the new channel. During the accommodation period, the whisker returns are present and correct in the barrel field but are not yet integrated with the pre-existing visual estimate of near-field geometry. The follow-up recorded, uniformly, that clients in the first fortnight perceive doorways, chair backs, cabinet openings, and other apertures as materially narrower than the tape measure records them. The effect is temporary and resolves without intervention as the two channels come into register; the corporation nonetheless asks that clients cross doorways deliberately and slowly during the accommodation period and that clients driving during the period allow additional following distance until the effect has passed.
“For fourteen days, roughly, the client's cortex will be attempting to reconcile two spatial estimates of the same apertures — the one they have used since childhood, and the one their whiskers are now offering. The two do not initially agree, and the client's felt sense during the disagreement is that every doorway is a size smaller than the doorway they remember. It is not; the tape measure is unchanged. The client is asked to trust the tape measure for two weeks and to move through their rooms with corresponding care. The follow-up records no case in which the accommodation failed to complete.”

Existing clients
For clients who have already received a Morphic Feline or Morphic Otter design under the base vibrissal specification, the corporation will make a Vibrissae-package retrofit procedure available beginning in February 2023, on the corporation's standard follow-up terms. Details will be sent by the Office of Client Services to affected clients directly over the autumn. The procedure is elective in all cases; the pre-2022 vibrissal specification remains fully supported for clients who wish to retain it and is not being retired.
No change to safety register terms
The Vibrissae package falls within the existing Phenotype Renovations safety register and does not open a new register class. Adverse-event surveillance for the new package will be reported alongside the parent template in the corporation's annual safety disclosures.
